Independent Chinese PEN Center Calls for Absolute Freedom of Gui Minhai

According to a credible source, the Independent Chinese PEN Center confirmed again today on October 29, 2017that Swedish national Gui Minhai, also known as Ah Hai (pen-name), one of criminals detained for the “Causeway Bay bookstore incident” taking place in Hong Kong, a publisher and member of the Independent Chinese PEN Center, was released from prison on October 17, 2017 and now temporarily rents an apartment in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo, Zhejiang province. He is still detained by Chinese police, and his personal freedom, including freedom of contacting the rest of the world, is under strict control. It remains unclear “how long Gui Minhai will be held under surveillance after being released from prison, but continue to be detained without gaining absolute liberty.”

The Independent Chinese PEN Center calls on Chinese police to immediately free Gui Minhai and let him enjoy personal freedom in China, including freedom of movement, freedom of correspondence and freedom of interaction with society. Chinese police are urged to allow his friends who are writers and members of the Independent Chinese PEN Center from Ningbo, Hangzhouand Shanghai who have cared for the whereabouts of GuiMinhai
The Independent Chinese PEN Center also urgesdiplomats at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing or Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai to arrange a meeting with Swedish national Gui Minhai in Ningbo as soon as possible and assist him in re-issuing a new Swedish passport to let him leave China for his home in Germany.
